About PAUA Architects

PAUA Architects is an award-winning Te Kāhui Whaihanga (NZ Institute of Architects) Practice.  Formerly known as Antanas Procuta Architects, we take pride in designing homes with personality and presence.

From our central Kirikiriroa Hamilton studio PAUA Architects provides a comprehensive range of design services, including commercial and residential architecture, urban design, and heritage work, all with environmental sustainability strategies integrated within the design.

We advocate environmental responsibility and wise resource use, both in our work and in the wider community. We are members of the New Zealand Green Building Council.

PAUA Architects is a Practice Member of the New Zealand Institute of Architects, and a signatory to the Urban Design Protocol.

Great architecture is the result of a strong, collaborative process underpinned by open, robust communication throughout the journey.

Led by practice founder Antanas Procuta, we’ve worked with clients across the Waikato and Coromandel regions for the past two decades on a significant number of award-winning projects.

The PAUA process begins by discussing your needs, values and vision.  We encourage the people we work with to keep an open mind and never assume the perceived constraints of a project or site are negative. There is always a design solution . . .  it may just not be what you were expecting.

The unique homes and buildings you see here all started with one simple conversation, let's begin yours together. Please call our studio to get started on a project you are thinking about.

Starting with nothing and creating a place that is entirely bespoke is actually a rare and invigorating experience. It is a special feeling to orchestrate designers, builders and trades to create a home that is totally customised to our purpose and the surrounding environment

Alastair & Anna Grigg – Home Owners

"What I remember is that I had a lot of laughs with the architect in the design process, and we still enjoy catching up from time to time.  I showed them pictures of what we liked, and they came up with a stunner"

Janet Myers, Roto-o-Rangi Residence

"I have seen at first hand how Paua Architects has been able to take a brief and interact with clients to successfully design a brilliant solution"

Steve Tritt, New Zealand Trade and Enterprise

"They are definitely professional, and come up with great design ideas and solutions.  We find they work efficiently with us through solutions for challenging building projects."

Murray Shaw, Murray V Shaw Builders Ltd

"Paua Architects proved immediately that they had a community spirit, a detailed knowledge of theatre space, and most importantly, an interest in architecturally realising the vision that One Victoria Trust had for the Meteor theatre in Hamilton.  It is not an overstatement to say that the OVT would not have been able to have achieved the outcome – from the fundraising effort and the renovation project, from concept to finished build – without the expert guidance and support of Paua Architects."

Charlotte Isaac, One Victoria Trust

"Te Ahurutanga has been one of the highlights for the Pro Vice-Chancellor office because it provides a central hub, a natural gathering place for many of our staff, students, and the community that reflects the core values of our distinctiveness in being Maori.  We have occupied the building for some time now and continue to get compliments about the building’s uniqueness; its structure, style, warm colours, ambience & design.  Many have stated that Te Ahurutanga is easily the best designed building on campus."

Herearoha Skipper, The University of Waikato

"Paua Architects has an obvious, and indeed passionate, interest in ensuring that their design and their architecture lasts the distance.  What struck us – and what we viewed as being important to the success of our new facility – was Paua’s intrinsic interest in working collaboratively with our Management Team and the Proprietors through the project."

Ken Williamson, Proprietors Board Chair, Waikato Diocesan School for Girls

"Paua has a rare talent for projects that require more than architecture, delivering projects that set new benchmarks in creative development and delivery."

Steve Tritt, New Zealand Trade and Enterprise

The Sports Centre, as well as being a beautifully designed and well-functioning building, was designed perfectly to best respond to its challenging site.  Paua made the most of the building’s situation and shaped the building to create a beautiful outdoor courtyard with well-established trees at its centre.”

Ken Williamson, Proprietors Board Chair, Waikato Diocesan School for Girls

"Paua Architects listened to us, visited our existing home and new site, advised us, respected our very modest budget, found an excellent builder, and developed a simple, delightful house that our family loves to this day"

Denise Irvine, Hamilton

"Building is such a roller coaster of excitement, mess and stress.  The planning part with the architect is so exciting it’s the best bit; that, and finishing the build.  There’s not a day goes by without me thinking that I’m glad the architect suggested this or that, and I’m glad we did it"

Fiona Bailey, Hamilton

"What PAUA achieved with that building was something quite unique and it has been one of my favourite buildings since the makeover was complete.  I often used to take campus visitors in there for a look at how much can be achieved with a very simple structure."
