PAUA Architects' approach to working with whānau, hapu, and iwi Māori, on Marae, Papakāinga, and other kaupapa Māori projects, leans heavily on a collaborative, partnership approach.
As Architects, we see our role as facilitators. We don’t come to the table with a preconceived vision. Rather, we hold the pencil, but it is your vision and your ideas that we want to bring to life.
Great design and architecture are all about the people who will use and inhabit the spaces. We know from experience that more collaboration and more kōrero with clients and communities, will lead to better design and better outcomes.

kaupapa in practice
hbhs whare ako
PAUA Architects were engaged by the HBHS Board of Trustees to design a school marae. The brief was to provide a new marae complex that the school can be proud of, with integrated learning spaces within the whare. Consultation with the Kiingitanga was instigated by the kura. 
cambridge police hub
PAUA Architects were engaged by the New Zealand Police and Tainui Group Holdings to design a new police station and community hub on the corner Fort and Victoria streets in Cambridge. The brief was to provide a design that reflected the new approach in New Zealand policing and acknowledged the nature of this collaborative partnership between Waikato-Tainui and the NZ Police in this development.

ĀHURUTANGA
Te Āhurutanga is in a class of its own on the Waikato University campus. The single-storey cedar building with its steeply pitched roof and deep verandas has the unmistakable air of a Māori whare, and it stands proud and colourful among the neighbouring buildings. Te Āhurutanga has recently begun a new chapter in its campus history and it has a new look to complement the change of status, a look that weaves together its past and present roles and offers a creative environment for those who work there.
